Challenge-Obstructive Stress Source Scale – Chinese Version

Description

In 1976, Hans Selye pointed out that stress can be classified as either positive or negative, where positive stress can promote a sense of achievement and satisfaction, while negative stress diminishes personal accomplishment and hinders personal growth, though he did not explore this concept in depth (Selye, 1976). Most researchers have classified work stress based on stressful events and the outcomes they produce but have paid less attention to the positive functions of stress. Cavanaugh et al. identified two types of stressors: challenge stressors and hindrance stressors (Cavanaugh, Boswell, Roehling, & Boudreau, 2000). Challenge stressors refer to pressures derived from the workload, responsibilities, work tasks, and time constraints that can motivate individuals to achieve work goals, enhance their capabilities, positively influence personal performance, and promote individual career development. Conversely, hindrance stressors arise from cumbersome work procedures, bureaucratic atmospheres, job insecurity, and unclear career directions, leading to unnecessary resource consumption, lowering personal accomplishment, and negatively impacting work performance and career trajectories. The classification of stress into challenge and hindrance is helpful for organizations and employees to perceive stress objectively, and this classification has gained recognition from many scholars.
