Post-Traumatic Growth Inventory Simplified Chinese Version – Chinese Version

Description

Buddhism and Greek tragic stories have stated, “What does not kill us makes us stronger.” This concept is also present in ancient literature and philosophy: the struggle against a difficult life can lead to growth and positive change, referred to as Post-Traumatic Growth (PTG). PTG refers to the positive psychological changes experienced by individuals during the struggle against traumatic negative life events and situations. It is not caused directly by the traumatic event itself but emerges through the individual’s confrontation with the trauma (Tedeschi & Calhoun, 1995). Traumatic events shatter and force individuals to reconstruct their goals, beliefs, and worldviews, presenting significant challenges to their self-concept and social cognition prior to the trauma (Tedeschi & Calhoun, 1995, 2004).

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to explore the factors promoting Post-Traumatic Growth (PTG) and how individuals can experience positive psychological changes through their confrontation with traumatic events.

Test Year

Research was conducted from May 2010 to December 2010.

Administration Method and Scoring

The study utilized a convenient sampling method, surveying more than 600 accident trauma victims from ten hospitals in Shanghai. A total of 650 questionnaires were collected, of which 628 were valid, yielding a valid response rate of 96.6%. The Revised Posttraumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI) consists of 20 items, each scored on a six-point scale from 0 to 5, giving a total score ranging from 0 to 100.

Reliability and Validity

The Cronbach’s α coefficient for the revised scale is 0.90, while the coefficients for the sub-scales range from 0.67 to 0.85.

Factors and Subscales

Factors promoting PTG include personality traits (such as optimism and hope), social support, benefit finding, and meaning making. Active coping strategies and positive reappraisal also significantly predict PTG.
