De NYHA classificatie is oorspronkelijk ontworpen als functionele classificatie voor patiënten met hartfalen, maar kan gebruikt worden bij elke aandoening met aan ademnood gerelateerde functiebeperking, zoals bijv. COPD of obesitas. De NYHA is een internationale standaard waarmee de ernst van de (hart)kwaal of ademnood wordt ingedeeld in een bepaalde klasse. De ernst wordt gebaseerd op symptomen bij inspanning. De NYHA-classificatie bestaat uit 4 groepen die met een Romeins cijfer worden aangegeven: Klasse I, II, III of IV. Voor elke klasse is beschreven welke klachten een patiënt moet hebben om daarin te worden ingedeeld.
