De Bristol Stoelgangschaal (BSS) is een kaart waarbij ontlasting op basis van de consistentie in 7 categorieën wordt verdeeld (zoals zichtbaar in het toiletwater). Vaak wordt de BSS gecombineerd gebruikt met een defecatiedagboek om defecatieproblemen in kaart te brengen. De schaal die in Engeland ook wel de ‘Meyers Scale’ wordt genoemd, is ontwikkeld door een aantal gastro-enterologen aan de Universiteit van Bristol, vandaar de naam. De vorm van de ontlasting hangt af van de tijd dat die in de darmen is geweest (afhankelijk van meerdere factoren zoals vochtigheid, constipatie, dieet etc.).
