Katz Adjustment Scale–Form R2

Category Details
Description The Katz Adjustment Scale–Form R2 (Katz & Lyerly, 1963) is an inventory designed to assess the adjustment of patients by evaluating their engagement in socially expected activities. It consists of 16 items related to family and social responsibilities, social activities, self-care, home adjustment, and community involvement. A relative rates whether the patient “is not doing it,” “is doing it some,” or “is doing it regularly” on a three-point scale. The total score reflects the patient’s involvement in these activities during the preceding weeks.

Reliability Internal consistency: Kuder-Richardson reliability estimates range from .41 to .87.
Validity Concurrent validity: Point-biserial correlation between psychopathology scales and clinical judgment shows consistent agreement with high confidence. Relatives effectively distinguish between patients with varying levels of psychopathology, with well patients engaging in significantly more socially expected activities. High correlations (.79 and .67) with the criterion reflect strong agreement between the relative’s report and clinical judgment.
