Attitude Toward Disabled Persons Scale Form-0 (ATDP, ATDP-0)

CategoryDetails
DescriptionThe Attitude Toward Disabled Persons Scale Form-0 (ATDP-0; Yuker, Block, & Campbell, 1960) is a 20-item Likert-format scale designed to measure general attitudes toward disabled persons as a group rather than toward any specific disability. While it has no fixed time limit, most participants complete the questionnaire in less than 20 minutes. The ATDP-0 items are categorized into two domains: “Characteristics” of the disabled (10 items) and “Treatment” of the disabled (10 items). However, subsequent studies (e.g., Yuker, Block, & Younng, 1970) did not support the use of these subscales. Scores are influenced by various demographic factors such as age, sex, education, and socioeconomic status, and are correlated with personality traits and motivations. Psychometric analyses indicate that the ATDP-0 is both reliable and valid for use among disabled and non-disabled individuals.

Number of ItemsOriginally 20 items, reduced to 15 in later studies.
FormatRespondents rate 20 items on a 6-point Likert scale from -3 (“I disagree very much”) to +3 (“I agree very much”). A weighted sum of responses provides a global attitude measure.
ReliabilityA 6.45 standard error of measurement, a median stability coefficient of .73, and split-half equivalence reliability coefficients ranging from .75 to .85 were reported.
ValidityNonlinear hierarchies among attitude statements were identified through ordering-theoretic analysis, offering insights into the structure and expression of attitudes.
Factor AnalysisNo factor analysis indicated.
