Transgender Attitudes and Beliefs Scale – Chinese Version

Description

Transgender individuals are those who psychologically cannot identify with their birth-assigned gender but instead identify as belonging to another gender. The transgender community accounts for approximately 0.10% to 1.10% of the global population. The prevalence of transgender individuals in China is unclear. According to relevant statistical data, around 0.3% of adults in the Asia-Pacific region belong to the transgender community. Based on this proportion, there are estimated to be about 4 million transgender individuals in China, and this number continues to rise. Research shows that compared to cisgender individuals (those whose gender identity matches their birth-assigned gender), transgender individuals have poorer mental health, particularly with significant anxiety and depression symptoms, which are considered risk factors for suicide. The minority stress theory posits that the psychological distress experienced by transgender individuals stems from social causes and explains how the discrimination and prejudice they face in a gender-binary society negatively impact their mental health, especially when they cannot access social support. Therefore, improving the living conditions of transgender individuals largely depends on the level of societal recognition they receive.

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to assess the validity and reliability of the Chinese version of the Transgender Attitudes and Beliefs Scale (TABS) for evaluating the attitudes of the general adult population towards transgender individuals.

Test Year

Information not available.

Administration Method and Scoring

The scale contains 26 items. Participants are asked to respond on a Likert scale where:
1 = 完全不同意 (Strongly Disagree);
2 = 基本不同意 (Disagree);
3 = 有些不同意 (Somewhat Disagree);
4 = 不确定 (Neutral);
5 = 有些同意 (Somewhat Agree);
6 = 基本同意 (Agree);
7 = 完全同意 (Strongly Agree).

Reliability and Validity

The content validity index (I-CVI) for each item ranged from 0.83 to 1.00, and the scale’s content validity index (S-CVI) was 0.98. Exploratory factor analysis extracted three common factors: interpersonal comfort, gender beliefs, and human values, explaining a total variance of 57.13%. The confirmatory factor analysis indicated an acceptable fit for the scale (X/df = 2.95, RMSEA = 0.05, GFI = 0.92, AGFI = 0.90). The overall Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was 0.95, with the three factors having Cronbach’s alpha coefficients of 0.95, 0.88, and 0.86, respectively. The test-retest reliability for the total scale was 0.88, and for the three factors, it was 0.78, 0.65, and 0.91, respectively. This indicates good reliability and validity for the TABS.
