Adolescent Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire – Chinese Version

Description

The Buss-Durkee Hostility Inventory (BDHI), developed by Buss and Durkee in 1957, is one of the earliest and most commonly used scales for assessing individual aggression in the field of aggressive research. According to a survey by Bushman et al. in 1991, this scale was referenced 242 times in the Social Science Citation Index (SSCI) from 1960 to 1989. Buss and Perry revised the scale in 1992 by deleting and reintroducing some items, using factor analysis to produce the Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire (BPAQ). The revised BPAQ includes four dimensions: 身体攻击 (physical aggression), 言语攻击 (verbal aggression), 愤怒 (anger), and 敌意 (hostility). Among these, physical and verbal aggression represent behaviors, anger is an emotional expression, and hostility is a cognitive expression. This scale has become one of the most authoritative tools for measuring individual aggression.

Purpose

The purpose of this research was to adapt the Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire for a youth population.

Administration Method and Scoring

Using a simple random cluster sampling method, 620 students from the fourth grade of elementary school to the third year of high school in four schools in Shanghai were selected as subjects. After excluding 11 invalid questionnaires (mainly those with missing answers and those exhibiting clear default response patterns), 609 valid subjects remained.

Reliability and Validity

The test-retest reliability of the scale was found to be 0.92, and the internal consistency coefficient was 0.84. Independent samples t-test results indicated that male participants scored significantly higher than female participants in physical aggression, alternative aggression, and overall aggression.
