Phubbing is a newly coined term that combines “phone” and “snubbing.” It is also referred to as “phubbing,” “low-head tribe,” “low-head syndrome,” or “smartphone snubbing behavior.” This term describes the behavior of individuals who, in social situations, focus solely on playing on their smartphones, neglecting or disregarding the people or events around them. Phubbing is a unique product of the era, arising alongside the development of smartphones and mobile internet technology. It emphasizes how individual smartphone use can obstruct communication during interpersonal exchanges, leading to feelings of neglect and ultimately affecting interpersonal relationships. Initially, research on phubbing primarily focused on romantic and workplace relationships. However, with deeper investigations, the phenomenon of phubbing in parent-child relationships has gained increasing attention from researchers.

Purpose

The purpose of the Parents Phubbing Scale (The Chinese version of Parents Phubbing Scale) is to measure the level of phubbing behavior perceived by adolescents from their parents.

Administration Method and Scoring

The scale consists of 9 items measured using a Likert 5-point scoring system:
1 (非常不符合 – very inconsistent),
2 (不太符合 – somewhat inconsistent),
3 (不确定 – uncertain),
4 (符合 – consistent),
5 (非常符合 – very consistent).
Item 7 requires reverse scoring: “我和父母聊天的时候，我的父母不会使用手机” (When I chat with my parents, they do not use their phones). A higher total score indicates more severe phubbing behavior.
