Online Gaming Disorder/Addiction Scale/Questionnaire Compilation (IGD-20 test, IAT, GDSS) – Chinese Version

Description

Video games provide a rich source of entertainment and create new virtual worlds, but excessive gaming can harm individuals’ physical and mental health, leading to gaming disorder (GD). As of December 2020, the global prevalence of gaming disorder was 3.3%, with a higher prevalence among males (8.5%) compared to females (3.5%). Among regions, Asia had the highest prevalence (6.3%), followed by North America (3.6%), Oceania (3.0%), and Europe (2.7%). The prevalence was highest in children and adolescents (6.6%) (Kimet al., 2022). Gaming disorder is characterized by a persistent or recurrent pattern of gaming behavior that includes both online (internet gaming disorder, IGD) and offline forms, manifesting as impaired control over gaming activities, increased priority given to gaming, and continued or escalating gaming behavior despite negative consequences (WHO, 2019). Other similar concepts used to describe this behavioral disorder include “gaming addiction” (Lemmens, Valkenburg, & Peter, 2009), “pathological gaming” (Lemmens, Valkenburg, & Peter, 2011), and “problematic gaming” (Desai, Krishnan-Sarin, Cavallo, & Potenza, 2010).

Administration Method and Scoring

The Internet Gaming Disorder Scale (IGD-20 test), developed by Pontes et al. (2014), is based on the DSM-5 diagnostic criteria and includes 6 factors (salience, emotional regulation, tolerance, withdrawal, conflict, and relapse) with 20 items. A Likert five-point scale is used (1=strongly disagree, 2=disagree, 3=neutral, 4=agree, 5=strongly agree). A total score exceeding 71 indicates the presence of internet gaming disorder. The Internet Gaming Disorder Scale (IGD-20 test) instruction guide states: Please answer the following questions based on your gaming experiences in the past 12 months.

Factors and Subscales

The IGD-20 test consists of the following 6 factors:
– 凸显性 (Salience)
– 情绪调节 (Emotional Regulation)
– 耐受 (Tolerance)
– 戒断 (Withdrawal)
– 冲突 (Conflict)
– 复发 (Relapse)

The questionnaire by Petry et al., based on the DSM-5, contains 9 items that cover symptoms such as cravings, tolerance, and withdrawal. It employs a binary answer format; a user is considered a pathological gamer if they meet 5 or more criteria. The Internet Addiction Test (IAT) assesses the severity of internet addiction and includes 20 items that measure dimensions such as compulsive internet use, internet dependence, withdrawal reactions, and the impact of internet use on various life areas. A score above 50 indicates problematic internet usage with implications for social functioning.
