Attentional Control Scale – Chinese Version

Description

Emotion regulation refers to the process through which individuals manage their emotions, determining what emotions to have, when they occur, how to experience and express them, and how to influence them (Gross, 2002; Zhang Wenhai, Lu Jiamei, 2012). Most previous studies have focused on intentional emotion regulation while neglecting another important aspect: automatic emotion regulation (Zhang Wenhai, Lu Jiamei, 2013). The automatic emotion regulation process is influenced by various psychological factors; for example, attentional control, which is part of cognitive control, can affect automatic emotion regulation. The Attentional Control Scale (ACS) was developed by Derryberry and Reed, originally measuring attentional control in the form of self-reported surveys, consisting of 20 items categorizing into 9 items for attentional focus and 11 items for attentional shifting.

Administration Method and Scoring

The first version of the Attentional Control Scale (ACS) provides 20 statements describing attentional behavior. Participants are asked to read each statement carefully and select the response that most closely reflects their situation, marking a “√” on the corresponding number. The response options are:
1=Almost never, 2=Sometimes, 3=Often, 4=Always.
Items 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 11, 12, 15, 16, and 20 are reversed scored (a total of 11 items), and the remaining 9 items are scored normally. The sum of scores from the 20 items constitutes the total score of the ACS, which ranges from 20-80 points; a higher score indicates a stronger ability to control attention.
