Description
Gambling refers to the act of wagering money or valuable items in risky activities with the expectation of winning more money or valuable possessions. Scholars define gambling behavior that disrupts personal, familial, and professional pursuits and is characterized by its persistence and recurrence as gambling disorder (GD). Problem gamblers are individuals who exhibit widespread abnormal gambling behavior but do not strictly meet the diagnostic criteria; their behavior is termed problem gambling. The lifetime prevalence of gambling disorder in the general population is approximately 0.4% to 1.0%, but the treatment-seeking rate among those with gambling disorder is less than 10%. In mainland China, due to the illegality of gambling behavior, patients often find it more challenging to acknowledge their gambling problems and rarely seek professional help. When patients are compelled to seek treatment due to their symptoms, the issue is often already severe and has led to negative impacts on their finances, work, or interpersonal relationships.
