De SDS heeft tot doel het meten van de ernst van de depressieve symptomen. De vragenlijst is gebruiksvriendelijk en bestaat uit 20 items die betrekking hebben op verschillende kenmerken van depressie. De helft van de vragen is positief geformuleerd en de andere helft is negatief geformuleerd.
