| Description | The Harvard Group Scale of Hypnotic Susceptibility, Form A (Shor & Orne, 1961) is an adaptation for group administration with self-report scoring of the Stanford Hypnotic Susceptibility Scale, Form A. Originally developed for individual administration and objective scoring (Weitzenhoffer & Hilgard, 1959), the group version eliminates the need for a trained examiner to test each subject individually, allowing groups of any size to be administered the scale. A sample of 132 undergraduates was tested with the new group-administered version, with results indicating that it yields norms consistent with the original Stanford version. The scale was also found to predict subsequent hypnotic depth effectively. Kuder-Richardson reliabilities for the total scale were reported as .80 and .83 in two different samples. |

| Purpose | To adapt the Stanford Hypnotic Susceptibility Scale, Form A, for group administration with self-report scoring. |
| Construct | Hypnotic Susceptibility |
| Instrument Type | Rating Scale |
| Reliability | Internal reliability: Kuder-Richardson reliabilities .80 and .83 in two different samples. |
| Validity | Content validity: The behaviors measured by the scale (motor automatisms, challenge catalepsies, amnesia, hallucination, and post-hypnotic suggestion) are generally agreed upon as defining the lower region of hypnotic depth. |
| Factor Analysis | No factor analysis indicated. |
| Test Methodology | The scale is a 12-item measure administered on paper with a self-report scoring format. |
