Description
Psychological capital is a positive psychological force that helps enhance individual behavioral performance, manifested during the process of personal growth and development. With the rise of positive psychology, psychological capital has received increasing attention for its benefits on individual behavior and psychology. A meta-analysis from 2001 found that psychological capital, composed of four elements: self-esteem, general self-efficacy, locus of control, and emotional stability, can explain 20%-30% of the variance in self-rated employee performance, demonstrating its significant predictive power over work performance. Research by Ke Jianglin and others also found that employee psychological capital positively affects work performance, job satisfaction, and organizational commitment. Another meta-analysis in 2011 showed that psychological capital positively influences desirable outcomes such as work performance, salary level, job satisfaction, organizational commitment, work attitudes, organizational citizenship behavior, and mental health, while negatively impacting undesirable outcomes such as cynicism, work stress, burnout, work anxiety, and turnover intention. Further, studies have shown that there is a close relationship between psychological capital and mental health, with the impact of psychological capital on mental health increasing over time. In addition to research on employees’ psychological capital within organizational settings, researchers have also broadly studied the psychological capital of college students. Surveys indicated a significant negative correlation between the psychological capital of impoverished college students and their psychological symptoms. Another study also found that psychological capital has a significant positive predictive effect on college students’ mental health levels and a significant negative predictive effect on psychological disorder symptoms.
