Multidimensional Self-Control Scale – Chinese Version

Description

Self-control refers to an individual’s ability to overcome impulses, emotions, external temptations, and internal desires, controlling and adjusting their emotions, behaviors, and cognitions. The level of self-control significantly impacts an individual’s career success, physical and mental health, and subjective well-being. Years of in-depth research have led scholars to gradually recognize that self-control is not just a simple act of controlling and adjusting behaviors. In fact, it is a complex concept involving multiple cognitive processing mechanisms. Strack and Hofmann proposed a dual-systems theory regarding self-control, indicating that self-control is realized through the competition between impulsive processes and reflective processes. In specific contexts, these two processes collectively influence individuals, leading them to make corresponding behavioral decisions after careful consideration. The dual-systems model of self-control has received substantial support from various research findings.

Administration Method and Scoring

The Multidimensional Self-Control Scale (MSCS), consisting of 29 items, has a three-level pyramid structure. It includes 6 first-order dimensions:
1. 冲动控制 (IC, Impulse Control)
2. 拖延控制 (PRO, Procrastination)
3. 注意控制 (AC, Attentional Control)
4. 情绪控制 (EC, Emotional Control)
5. 目标定向 (GO, Goal Orientation)
6. 自我控制策略 (SCS, Self-Control Strategies).

These dimensions can be consolidated into 2 second-order dimensions:
1. 抑制性自我控制 (Inhibitory Self-Control)
2. 启动性自我控制 (Initiatory Self-Control).

Finally, these two second-order dimensions can be integrated into a third-order overall self-control construct. The scale uses a 5-point Likert scoring system, where 1 indicates “strongly disagree” and 5 indicates “strongly agree.” Higher scores reflect a higher level of self-control. The internal consistency reliability for the Chinese version of the MSCS ranges from 0.721 to 0.826. The correlations with the total score and subscale scores of the Chinese version of the Self-Control Scale (SCS) range from 0.447 to 0.757, with PReliability and Validity
The reliability and validity analysis showed that the internal consistency reliability for the MSCS Chinese version ranged from 0.721 to 0.826, with significant correlations with the self-control scale (SCS) ranging from 0.447 to 0.757 (PFactors and Subscales
1. 冲动控制 (IC, Impulse Control)
2. 拖延控制 (PRO, Procrastination)
3. 注意控制 (AC, Attentional Control)
4. 情绪控制 (EC, Emotional Control)
5. 目标定向 (GO, Goal Orientation)
6. 自我控制策略 (SCS, Self-Control Strategies)
Consolidated into:
1. 抑制性自我控制 (Inhibitory Self-Control)
2. 启动性自我控制 (Initiatory Self-Control)
Overall self-control combines these two dimensions.
