Purpose

Research indicates that grit is closely associated with adolescents’ academic achievement, mental health, and adaptability. Duckworth and colleagues view grit as a malleable personality trait. Historical analyses by Galton and Cox have indicated a strong relationship between individual passion, effort, and success.

Administration Method and Scoring

Duckworth developed the Grit Scale, which contains 12 items categorized into two dimensions:
– 持续努力 (Effort)
– 兴趣一致性 (Interest Consistency)

The scale was later revised to the Grit-S (Short Grit Scale), which includes 8 items for better psychometric performance. The responses are based on a 5-point Likert scale.

Reliability and Validity

The Grit Scale exhibits good structural validity, with a Cronbach’s alpha of 0.75 and split-half reliability of 0.80 in college student groups. Subsequent studies found the Grit Scale superior to the Grit-S in terms of measurement efficacy.
