Elderly Fraud Awareness Scale – Chinese Version

Description

In daily life, instances of elderly people being scammed are frequent. Essentially, fraud against the elderly represents a form of elder abuse. Public health surveys in the United States indicate that elderly fraud is directly positively correlated with the incidence of diseases among older adults. These health issues are quite apparent, including shortened life expectancy, severe depression, generalized anxiety disorders, lower subjective health ratings, and an increase in functional somatic complaints. Most scam victims experience emotions such as anger, stress, regret, betrayal, embarrassment, sadness, helplessness, and shame. Fraud brings about irreparable mental and material losses for the elderly. Without effective fraud prevention strategies for the elderly, the number of fraud cases can multiply alongside the growing population of older adults over the next 20 to 30 years, potentially leading to more severe societal impacts. Raising awareness among older adults, enhancing their ability to recognize scams, and fostering proactive consciousness can halt fraud before it occurs.
