Temperament is one of the core factors that influence an individual’s self-concept. Both temperament and self-concept involve certain aspects of emotion and personality. Temperament refers to the differences in reactivity and self-regulation that individuals display in the domains of emotion, activity, and attention. Based on the development model of temperament, Capaldi and Rothbart (1992) designed a temperament questionnaire for adolescents aged 9 to 15, which includes four major factors: Effortful Control (including Attention, Behavioral Control, and Inhibitory Control), Affiliation (including Sociability, Perceptual Sensitivity, and Pleasant Experiences), Negative Affect (frustration), and Extraversion (high-intensity pleasure, fear, and shyness). The Early Adolescent Temperament Questionnaire – Revised (EATQ-R) was created based on the original questionnaire by Capaldi and Rothbart in 1992, which has both self-report and parent-report versions. This research used the children’s self-report version. The revised temperament questionnaire by Ellis and Rothbart (1992) contains 53 items and includes 10 subscales, forming four major factors as previously mentioned. The questionnaire uses a 5-point scoring system ranging from 1 to 5, which corresponds to “Strongly Disagree,” “Disagree,” “Neutral,” “Agree,” and “Strongly Agree.” The internal consistency coefficients for the 10 subscales range from 0.65 to 0.82.

Administration Method and Scoring

The questionnaire employs a convenient sampling method, surveying students from four schools in Nanjing and five schools in Songjiang District, Shanghai, totaling 1018 students from grades four to six. The scoring is based on a 5-point Likert scale.

Reliability and Validity

The internal consistency coefficients for the six factors are as follows: Effortful Control: 3.971±0.679, Affiliation: 3.832±0.988, Negative Affect: 2.734±0.780, Extraversion: 2.683±1.092.
