Core Self-Evaluations Scale – Chinese Version

Core Self-Evaluations Scale – Chinese Version

Description

The concept of Core Self-Evaluations was first proposed by Judge in 1997. Judge primarily researched the impact of core self-evaluations on individuals, focusing on the individual by defining it as a fundamental assessment of one’s abilities and worth. This reflects a person’s intrinsic psychological traits and positive state. The concept of core self-evaluations encompasses many characteristics, which primarily include the following factors: (1) Evaluative nature. This trait must be evaluative rather than descriptive, meaning that it must not only state facts but also assess related levels. (2) Rootedness. Basic traits are generally hidden beneath surface traits, with many surface traits being determined by basic traits. (3) Breadth. The traits constituting core self-evaluations must be broader than other traits; for instance, an individual’s evaluation of a specific ability is certainly narrower than their evaluation of self as a whole.

Purpose

To assess the core self-evaluations of individuals that reflect their self-worth, abilities, and intrinsic psychological characteristics.

Test Year

2003

Administration Method and Scoring

Core self-evaluations are assessed using a measurement scale developed by Judge, Erez, Bono, and Thoresen (2003), which consists of 12 measurement items covering four dimensions: self-esteem, general self-efficacy, locus of control, and emotional stability. Participants self-evaluate these items using a 5-point Likert scale, where 1 means “strongly disagree” and 5 means “strongly agree.”

Reliability and Validity

In Zhao Juan’s research, the α reliability coefficient of the core self-evaluations scale was 0.785, and in Liu Geng’s research, it was 0.70.

Factors and Subscales

The four personality traits that constitute core self-evaluations are defined as follows: (1) Self-esteem – a positive assessment of one’s overall situation, reflecting acceptance and affirmation of oneself, as well as one’s perceived abilities and value. (2) Locus of control – the degree to which individuals believe they can control events in their lives. (3) Neuroticism (emotional stability) – the tendency of one’s emotions to fluctuate and their ability to regulate emotional responses. (4) General self-efficacy – an assessment of one’s ability to execute tasks well.
