Description
Social media refers to applications that allow users to create personal information, invite friends to access this information, and promote online communication, networking, and collaboration, providing users with the potential to establish and improve relationships. Commonly used social media platforms abroad include Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, while in China, platforms like WeChat, QQ, and Weibo are more prevalent. Despite the differences in functionalities among various social media platforms, they share some common features, such as social interaction, relationship creation and maintenance, and self-presentation. Social media addiction refers to individuals’ excessive focus on social media, with strong motivation, resulting in considerable time and energy dedicated to its use, which leads to damage in social activities, interpersonal relationships, learning, work, health, and well-being (Andreassen & Pallesen, 2014). In China, there have also been numerous studies on social media addiction. For example, Zhang Yali et al. (2021) defined social media addiction as a social psychological phenomenon where individuals lose control over the intensity and duration of their social media use, resulting in physiological and psychological discomfort.

Administration Method and Scoring
The BSMAS is a simple, quick, and effective scale that helps researchers and clinicians assess the level of social media addiction in individuals. It consists of six items assessed using a 5-point Likert scale (1 = 非常少, 2 = 很少, 3 = 有时, 4 = 经常, 5 = 非常经常). The total score ranges from 6 to 30, with higher scores indicating greater levels of addiction to social media.
Reliability and Validity
The BSMAS has demonstrated high reliability and validity across different cultural contexts and non-English populations. Studies by Zhao Jing reported a Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of 0.78, while Cui Jingjing et al. obtained a Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of 0.81.
Factors and Subscales
The BSMAS consists of the following factors, each representing a dimension of addiction:
– 显著性 (Significance)
– 情绪改变 (Emotional Regulation)
– 耐受性 (Tolerance)
– 戒断 (Withdrawal Symptoms)
– 冲突 (Conflict)
– 反复 (Relapse)
