De EQ-5D is een gestandaardiseerd instrument waarmee op vijf gezondheidsniveaus (mobiliteit, zelfzorg, dagelijkse activiteiten, pijn/ongemak en angst/depressie) een score wordt gegeven. Hieruit kan voor een individu of populatie een gewogen gezondheidsindex worden afgeleid. EuroQol is complementair aan andere ‘quality of life’-meetinstrumenten (zoals SF-36). Verder moet de patiënt aangeven hoe hij zijn gezondheidstoestand op een schaal van 0 tot 100 ervaart. Om de lijst goed te kunnen interpreteren, is het belangrijk dat de zorgverlener bekend is met de demografische gegevens van de patiënt.
