Description

The selection of a soulmate to establish an intimate love and marriage relationship is a complex and challenging question. Fletcher’s theory attempts to address this issue. Among its widely recognized and esteemed viewpoints, the ability of individuals to form close relationships with others depends on their standards or expectations regarding the characteristics of potential partners and the relationship itself. The closer the match between a sought partner and one’s ideal standards, the higher the possibility of establishing an intimate relationship. This is based on individuals holding ideal cognitive schemas about the personal traits of prospective partners. This ideal relationship cognitive model encompasses the standards and expectations that individuals have regarding partners in intimate relationships.

Administration Method and Scoring

Using the ideal partner scale developed by Fletcher (1999) and revised in Chinese by Cui Chao (2011), participants rate the importance of 14 characteristics on a scale from 1 to 7, where 1 indicates “completely unimportant” and 7 indicates “extremely important”.

Reliability and Validity

In Li Chang’s study, the Cronbach’s α coefficient for the scale was found to be 0.815.
