The dual-pathway model is a basic and effective theoretical framework for explaining how hostile attribution bias predicts aggression.

Administration Method and Scoring

The Chinese Version of the Word Sentence Association Paradigm for Hostility Scale (CV-WSAP-Hostility) has good reliability and validity, as well as cross-cultural consistency. It includes two subscales: hostile attribution and benevolent attribution. The scale consists of 16 ambiguous provocation sentences (e.g., “Someone slammed the door in front of you,” “Someone spoke while you were reading”). Each ambiguous sentence is presented twice in an alternating manner, once matched with hostile-related words (e.g., “aggressive,” “rude”) and once with benevolent-related words (e.g., “accidental,” “unnoticed”). Participants are required to rate the relevance of these two types of words to the ambiguous sentences on a 6-point scale (1 represents “not relevant at all”; 2 represents “less relevant”; 3 represents “slightly less relevant”; 4 represents “slightly relevant”; 5 represents “more relevant”; 6 represents “very relevant”). The total score following the sentences matched with hostile words indicates the hostile attribution score, while the total score assessing the similarity of the ambiguous sentences with benevolent words indicates the benevolent attribution score. The developers found that the Cronbach’s α coefficient for the hostile attribution subscale is 0.91, and for the benevolent attribution subscale, it is 0.90.
