Indecision Scale

Indecision Scale

CategoryDetails
DescriptionThe Indecision Scale (Holland & Nichols, 1964) was developed to measure personal attributes contributing to a student’s ability to make vocational decisions before entering college. The scale was created based on an item analysis of 273 activities, hobbies, school subjects, and sports from a large sample of high aptitude students (National Merit Finalists). A new sample of 217 boys was used to assess the concurrent validity of the scale, which included 15 items. Reliability was calculated using the Kuder-Richardson formula 20.

ReliabilityInternal consistency: The reliability (homogeneity) was calculated using the Kuder-Richardson formula 20. Reliability coefficients were .60 for boys and .40 for girls, confirming clinical impressions of heterogeneity.
ValidityConstruct validity: Self-ratings of leadership were positively correlated with scores on the scale (boys: r = .22, p < .01; girls: r = .16, p < .05). The life goal of being a community leader was also positively correlated with the scale (boys: r = .16, p < .05; girls: r = .14, p < .05).
