PurposeTo assess individual differences in the ways in which people form semantic relations.
DescriptionThe Semantic Habits Measure (Nunnally, Flaugher, & Hodges, 1963) contains 143 items that assess how individuals form semantic relations. The instrument uses binary-choice association items, with responses relating to four modes of semantic response: E-plus tendency (positive evaluations), E-minus tendency (negative evaluations), D tendency (sensuous denotative attributes), and C tendency (categorization). The instrument includes 5 subscales that are combined into 3 major scales: E-plus versus D and E-plus versus C form the E-plus scale, E-minus versus D and E-minus versus C form the E-minus scale, and the C-D balance scale contrasts C and D responses. Higher C-D scores indicate more C responses. Reliability of the major scales was approximately .80 in a sample of undergraduates.
