| Description | The Positive Outcomes of Cannabis Use Scale (POCUS; Parnes, Prince, & Conner, 2025) assesses the perceived positive consequences of cannabis use. The 19-item scale was developed using both deductive (literature and theory) and inductive (user responses) methods. It measures social, mood, cognitive, and sexual enhancements resulting from cannabis use. Psychometric evaluations, including reliability and validity analyses, were conducted on predominantly white adult samples. |
| Acronym | POCUS |
| Author | Parnes, Jamie E.; Prince, Mark A.; Conner, Bradley T. |
| Purpose | Examines positive cannabis use-related outcomes. |
| Construct | Cannabis-Related Positive Outcomes |

| Test Year | 2025 |
| Format | Items include three Likert-type scales with five response options for frequency (1 = Never to 5 = Always/Almost Always), valence (1 = Negative to 5 = Positive), and influence on future use (1 = Not at All Influential to 5 = Highly Influential). |
| Administration Method | Electronic |
| Number of Items | 19 |
| Factors and Subscales | Subscales: Social enhancement, Mood enhancement, Cognitive enhancement, Sexual enhancement. |
| Reliability | Internal Consistency: Excellent reliability with McDonald’s Omega values ranging from .85 to .87. |
| Validity | Concurrent Validity: POCUS predicted past 30-day cannabis use (b = 0.48, SE = 0.05, p < .001, IRR = 1.62). Convergent Validity: Positive expectancies predicted POCUS (b = 0.48, SE = 0.04, p < .0001), and POCUS predicted negative consequences (b = 0.23, SE = 0.05, p < .001, IRR = 1.26). Incremental Validity: POCUS positively predicted typical use frequency (R² = .37), significantly increasing explained outcome variance (Chi-squared (1) = 53.59, p < .001). |
| Factor Analysis | EFA supported a four-factor solution with excellent fit (Chi-squared (116) = 166.02, p < .001, CFI = .98, SRMR = 0.02). CFA confirmed the structure, with excellent fit (Chi-squared (171) = 2,467.87, p < .001, CFI = .97, RMSEA = .040). A higher-order factor was supported. |
| Age Group | Adulthood (18+). |
| Population Group | Human; Male; Female. |
| Population Details | Predominantly white college students and community adults from the United States. |
| Keywords | Incremental Validity; Positive Outcomes; Cannabis Use; Cognitive Enhancement; Social Enhancement; Mood Enhancement; Sexual Enhancement. |

Positive Outcomes of Cannabis Use Scale (POCUS)
Introduction
The Positive Outcomes of Cannabis Use Scale (POCUS) is designed to assess the frequency, valence, and future influence of specific outcomes experienced following cannabis use. Participants are asked to reflect on their cannabis use over the past month when responding to each item. For each outcome, individuals are asked to rate:
Frequency: How often the outcome has actually occurred after using cannabis in the past month.
Valence: How positive or negative the outcome typically was.
Future Influence: How likely the outcome is to influence future cannabis use.
Instructions for Participants
Please think about the outcomes you have experienced when using cannabis in the past month. For each item, please rate how often the outcome has occurred, how positive or negative the outcome typically was, and how likely it is that the outcome will influence your future cannabis use.
Items
The following items are rated on the scales described below:
I felt less guarded and more willing to be open with others.
I had more energy to stay active.
It was easier to ignore things that were already bothering me.
A sexual experience felt more enjoyable than when I am sober.
I felt calmer than before getting high.
It was easier for me to make conversation when I usually would have talked less.
It was easier to begin tasks that usually are hard for me to start.
It was easier to distract myself from stressful thoughts.
I was more willing to have a sexual experience.
I had fewer worries than before I got high.
It was easier to focus on the task at hand.
A sexual experience felt more intense.
I solved a problem I had been struggling with.
I felt more comfortable in social situations than when I am sober.
It was easier for me to have a positive outlook.
Masturbation felt more enjoyable.
Tasks I usually find boring I felt excited to do.
I talked to someone new in a situation where I usually would have kept to myself.
I felt more content than I normally do.
Response Scales
Frequency:
1 = Never
2 = Rarely
3 = Sometimes
4 = Often
5 = Always/Almost Always
Valence:
1 = Very Negative
2 = Negative
3 = Neutral
4 = Positive
5 = Very Positive
Future Influence:
1 = Not at All Influential
2 = Slightly Influential
3 = Moderately Influential
4 = Highly Influential
5= Extremely Influential
Note: The frequency response scale is the primary scale. The other scales are optional. Scale instructions should be adjusted to fit the administered scales.
Scoring
Total Score: A total score is calculated by taking the mean of all item responses.
Subscale Scores: Subscale scores are calculated by taking the mean of the items within each subscale:
Social Enhancement: Items 1, 6, 14, 18
Mood Enhancement: Items 3, 5, 8, 10, 15, 19
Cognitive Enhancement: Items 2, 7, 11, 13, 17
Sexual Enhancement: 4, 9, 12, 16
