| Description | The Music Box Test (Schucman, 1960) was developed to assess brightness discrimination as part of a study aimed at creating an objective, quantified, predictive measure of educability for children with severe intellectual disabilities. The test involved five round music boxes of identical size but varying colors: white, black, gray, black and gray, and gray and white. During pretest demonstrations, subjects were shown that only the gray box produced music. The task required selecting the gray music box in any unambiguous manner. The test consisted of six items where the gray box’s position varied, and other boxes were incrementally added. A transfer form used larger rectangular boxes with similar features. Among a sample of severely intellectually disabled children, the test exhibited high stability, consistency, and demonstrated both predictive and construct validity. |
