Emotion Vocabulary Scale

Emotion Vocabulary Scale

Abstract

The Emotion Vocabulary Scale, as detailed by Hamana in 2023, was formulated to measure the emotional vocabulary skills in children attending preschool and early elementary school. A shortened iteration of the original Emotional Vocabulary Scale was consequently created. The authors successfully engineered a scale with items corresponding to the developmental level of each age cohort by strategically omitting items that proved too difficult for young children on the preschool scale and, conversely, removing items that were too elementary for the younger children on the lower-grade scale. The instrument features two distinct 20-item receptive vocabulary lists, with one designated for each of the two different age groups. It also includes two 20-item productive vocabulary lists, similarly with one for each age group. Data for the study were procured from mothers of children ranging in age from three to nine years, as well as directly from the preschool and young elementary school children. The reduction in the scale’s length was achieved by employing the model of item response theory (IRT). The published results provide a report on the scale’s validity.

Purpose

This scale is designed to evaluate the development of emotion vocabulary in students who are in preschool and the early grades of elementary school.

Construct

Emotion Vocabulary

Validity

The validity of the test has been established through the observed correlation patterns between the Emotion Vocabulary Scale and a number of pertinent variables. These findings suggest a clear association between the Emotion Vocabulary Scale and the language abilities and social-emotional competence of children, which serves to confirm the scale’s validity.
