Abstract
The Eating Disorder Online Activity Questionnaire (EDOAQ), as detailed by Redmond et al. (2023), is an instrument designed to measure the problematic use of the internet (PUI) and its connection to the development of eating disorders (ED). The creation of the EDOAQ was a collaborative effort, involving discussions with ED experts, clinicians, as well as patients and their parents/carers who have lived experience with eating disorders and their treatment. The primary goal of the EDOAQ is to facilitate conversations with young people about their online activities. To assess the questionnaire, a qualitative study was undertaken. Feedback on an initial version of the EDOAQ was gathered from young individuals, aged 11 to 17, who were recently referred to a Community Eating Disorder Service (CEDS) in North West England. A thematic analysis of the narratives from both the young participants and clinicians led to the identification of three main themes: the usability and acceptability of the EDOAQ; the impact of online activity on eating disorders; and engagement with the digital world. The source material did not report any data on the measure’s reliability or validity. The authors suggest that subsequent research should employ a mix of qualitative and quantitative methodologies to continue the evaluation of the EDOAQ.
