| Description | The Angry Verbalization Scale I (AVS I; Doering et al., 1962) is a 40-item rating scale designed to measure potential responses to frustrating situations. Based on the premise that frustration-induced behaviors exist on a continuum from non-hostile to hostile, the scale was developed using the equal-appearing-intervals technique. Forty categories of responses were devised and exemplified through replies to a scenario where a student confronts an instructor about a frustrating grade. Thirty male college students rated the hostility level of these replies, forming the basis of the AVS I. The instrument is intended for understanding varying intensities of angry verbalization. |
