Algorithmic Management Questionnaire

Algorithmic Management Questionnaire

Category Details
Description The Algorithmic Management Questionnaire (AMQ; Parent-Rocheleau et al., 2024) was designed to assess workers’ perceived exposure to algorithmic management (AM) in areas such as monitoring, goal setting, scheduling, performance rating, and compensation. The measure was developed using a deductive approach (Hinkin, 1998) to ensure theoretical relevance. Initial item selection was based on a literature review of AM functions, with criteria requiring peer-reviewed sources, sufficient interview transcripts, and coverage of at least one AM function (e.g., Lehdonvirta, 2018; Möhlmann et al., 2021; Rahman, 2021; Wood et al., 2019). The original item pool contained 36 items (six per function), which was refined through content validity analysis. The final version consists of 20 items, confirmed through factor analysis across three participant samples. Psychometric results indicated strong reliability and validity.

Purpose The AMQ evaluates the extent to which employees perceive exposure to algorithmic management in various workplace functions.
Construct Algorithmic Control; Algorithmic Management
Instrument Type Inventory/Questionnaire
Test Type Original
Alternate Test Names AMQ
Test Year 2024
Administration Method Electronic
Format Participants respond to 20 items on a seven-point Likert scale (1 = completely disagree, 7 = strongly disagree).
Number of Items 20
Factors and Subscales Monitoring, Goal Setting, Scheduling, Performance Rating, Compensation
Reliability Internal consistency: Cronbach’s alpha ranged from 0.810 to 0.907 across dimensions.
Validity – Content Validity: Evaluated and confirmed based on meaningfulness and relevance to workplace functions. – Discriminant Validity: Low correlations (0.03-0.22) between AM functions and an external criterion variable. – Convergent Validity: Moderate to high correlations with system usefulness (0.43-0.53) and ease of use (0.35-0.43). – Predictive Validity: AM exposure at T1 negatively predicted job autonomy (β = -0.24, p < 0.01) and job complexity (β = -0.26, p < 0.01).
Factor Analysis Confirmatory factor analysis supported the five-factor structure, with excellent model fit: Model 1: χ²(162) = 346.8, CFI = 0.975, TLI = 0.971, RMSEA = 0.048, SRMR = 0.044. A second sample confirmed good fit: χ²(161) = 300.29, CFI = 0.968, TLI = 0.962, RMSEA = 0.049, SRMR = 0.052.
