Ages & Stages Questionnaires: Social-Emotional, Second Edition (ASQ:SE)

The Ages & Stages Questionnaires: Social-Emotional, Second Edition (ASQ:SE) is a tool designed to evaluate the social and emotional development of infants, toddlers, and preschoolers. It is intended to be used with children between the ages of 3 and 66 months. The ASQ:SE is a parent-completed questionnaire, meaning that primary caregivers are the ones who fill it out.

Structure & Scoring of the ASQ:SE

The ASQ:SE is comprised of eight questionnaires for different age levels. These age levels are 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36, 48, and 60 months. The questionnaire examines seven key areas of social-emotional development:

• Self-Regulation
• Compliance
• Communication
• Adaptive Functioning
• Autonomy
• Affect
• Interaction with People

Purpose & Use alongside Ages & Stages Questionnaires (ASQ)

The ASQ:SE is intended to complement the Ages & Stages Questionnaires (ASQ). While the ASQ focuses on screening for developmental delays in infants and young children (ages 4 to 60 months), the ASQ:SE specifically looks at social and emotional development within that same age range.

Psychometric Properties

Data from 3,014 individuals who completed the ASQ:SE were used to examine its psychometric properties, with 1,041 children participating in validity studies. To assess concurrent validity, the ASQ:SE was compared with:

• The Vineland Social Emotional Early Childhood Scale (SEEC).
• The Achenbach Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL).

The results showed strong agreement, with reported values ranging from .81 to .95 (overall agreement of .93). Additionally, sensitivity (the ability to identify children with social-emotional difficulties) ranged from .71 to .85, with an overall value of .78. Specificity (the ability to identify children without social-emotional difficulties) was even higher, ranging from .90 to .98, with an overall value of .95.
