Adolescent Future Thinking Rating Scale

Adolescent Future Thinking Rating Scale

CategoryDetails
DescriptionThe Adolescent Future Thinking Rating Scale (AFTRS; Tang et al., 2024) is designed to measure adolescents’ personal thoughts and feelings about their future. The scale includes statements covering seven key themes identified through interviews with the target population. The AFTRS exists in two versions: 18-item (AFTRS-18) and 12-item (AFTRS-12), both of which were evaluated using a community adolescent sample. Results from factor analysis, reliability testing, and validity assessments were included in the development process.

Test MethodologyTest Validity; Convergent Validity; Discriminant Validity; Predictive Validity; Test Reliability; Internal Consistency; Test-Retest Reliability; Factor Analysis; Confirmatory Factor Analysis; Exploratory Factor Analysis; Principal Component Analysis
ReliabilityInternal Consistency: Cronbach’s alpha for the three subscales were 0.90, 0.92, and 0.79 for AFTRS-18, and 0.86, 0.87, and 0.79 for AFTRS-12. Test-Retest Reliability: One-week test-retest reliability: 0.87, 0.89, and 0.86 (AFTRS-18); 0.84, 0.85, and 0.86 (AFTRS-12), all with p < 0.001.
ValidityConvergent Validity: Supported by Pearson’s correlation analyses with existing future thinking measures. Discriminant Validity: Established in comparison to cognitive risks. Predictive Validity: Both AFTRS-18 and AFTRS-12 were associated with factors such as depression and anxiety.
Factor AnalysisExploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) and Principal Component Analysis (PCA): Three factors extracted from 18 items, explaining 65.5% of variance. A 12-item version reduced the two 7-item factors to 4 items, explaining 69.8% of variance. Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA): The three-factor model showed a moderate-to-good fit for both AFTRS-18 (63.1% variance) and AFTRS-12 (67.2% variance). AFTRS-12 had a better fit.
