Description
People sometimes experience unwanted intrusive thoughts (UIT). Thought suppression is a form of cognitive neutralization that not only increases the intensity or frequency of intrusive thoughts but also perpetuates an individual’s negative evaluation of their own sense of responsibility. While some individuals can control, ignore, or effectively cope with intrusive thoughts to reduce their negative impact, most people struggle with them, potentially leading to the development of obsessive thinking, depressive symptoms, and other issues.
