Self-Monitoring Scale – Chinese Version

Description

There exists a group of people in reality who, like chameleons, showcase different roles and images in front of different individuals. In social psychology, this ability is referred to as self-monitoring. This social psychology construct was first proposed in a certain year (information not available), primarily used to analyze self-supervision and self-control guided by situational cues of social appropriateness, focusing on expressive behaviors and self-presentation. Self-monitoring (自我监控) describes the tendency of individuals to adjust their behaviors in different situations to meet specific contextual needs. High self-monitorers place importance on external factors, are more sensitive to social cues, and rely on external information to adjust their behavioral expressions and interactions with others; low self-monitorers focus on internal factors and rely on self-regulation to adapt behavior to the social context.

Purpose

The objective of self-monitoring is to describe how individuals adjust their behavior based on their awareness of social cues and the impression they wish to manage in different contexts.

Test Year

Initial proposal year: 1974, Revision year by Wang Cong: 2014

Administration Method and Scoring

The self-monitoring scale consists of 8 items (e.g., “In order to leave a deep impression on others or please them, I can play along”). Participants respond using a 5-point Likert scale, where 1 = “Strongly Disagree,” and 5 = “Strongly Agree.” A higher total score indicates a higher level of self-monitoring.

Reliability and Validity

The reliability coefficients for the two dimensions of the scale are as follows: Dimension 1 (α=0.84): Self-Monitoring Motivation (自我监察动机), Dimension 2 (α=0.83): Self-Monitoring Ability (自我监察能力).

Factors and Subscales

– Dimension 1 (自我监察动机, Self-Monitoring Motivation)
– Dimension 2 (自我监察能力, Self-Monitoring Ability)
