Revised Social Connectedness Scale – Chinese Version

Description

Social connectedness is a self-attribute, representing an individual’s awareness of the long-lasting intimacy of interpersonal relationships with the surrounding world. In recent years, social connectedness has been proposed and applied as a psychological construct that better describes individual experiences of self-other relationships in research related to mental health and counseling psychology. It is an essential component of an individual’s sense of belonging.

Administration Method and Scoring

The Social Connectedness Scale – Revised (SCS-R) developed by Lee et al. (2001) consists of 20 items, assessing an individual’s awareness of long-lasting interpersonal relationship intimacy. The scale includes two dimensions: 社会联结 (Social Connectedness) and 社会非联结 (Social Non-Connectedness). A 6-point Likert scale is used (1 = strongly disagree, 6 = strongly agree), with higher scores indicating higher levels of social connectedness. Items in the social non-connectedness dimension are scored in reverse.

Reliability and Validity

In a study conducted by Fan Xiaolan et al. (2015), the total scale’s Cronbach’s α coefficient was 0.911, with the social connectedness dimension at 0.822 and the social non-connectedness dimension at 0.867. In research by Hu Fang, the reliability for the social non-connectedness dimension was 0.96, and for the social connectedness dimension, it was 0.92, indicating good reliability and validity.

Factors and Subscales

The SCS-R includes two main factors:
1. 社会联结 (Social Connectedness)
2. 社会非联结 (Social Non-Connectedness)
