Description
Insomnia is characterized by frequent and persistent difficulties in falling asleep or maintaining sleep, leading to dissatisfaction with sleep. The Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) was developed by Morin in 1993 to assess the severity of insomnia and its impact on physical health, daily functioning, and quality of life.

Purpose
The purpose of the Insomnia Severity Index is to evaluate the insomnia experienced by respondents over the past two weeks.
Test Year
The scale was translated into Chinese in 2010 by scholars in Hong Kong and was tested among community residents.
Administration Method and Scoring
The scale has three versions, with the patient version comprising 7 items. It uses a 5-point Likert scale where each item is scored from 0 to 4, resulting in a total score range of 0 to 28. Higher scores indicate more severe insomnia. Specifically, scoring is defined as follows:
– 0 points: “none” (无)
– 1 point: “mild” (轻度)
– 2 points: “moderate” (中度)
– 3 points: “severe” (重度)
– 4 points: “extremely severe” (极重度)
For assessing the satisfaction or dissatisfaction with the sleep pattern:
– 0 points: “very satisfied” (非常满意)
– 1 point: “satisfied” (满意)
– 2 points: “not very satisfied” (不太满意)
– 3 points: “dissatisfied” (不满意)
– 4 points: “very dissatisfied” (非常不满意)
Reliability and Validity
The Insomnia Severity Index was later applied to clinical insomnia populations by Bai Chunjie and others, testing its reliability and validity. The internal consistency reliability (Cronbach’s α coefficient) was found to be 0.804, and the test-retest reliability was 0.887, indicating good reliability and validity.
