Career Calling Scale – Chinese Version

Career Calling Scale – Chinese Version

Description

The term “sense of mission” originated in the 16th century within the Western religious domain, generally referring to clergy who felt a call and mandate from God to complete specific tasks or roles. By the late 20th century, sociologist Bellah et al. (1985) proposed that people typically approach work from three main perspectives: job orientation, which focuses on economic returns; career orientation, which emphasizes advancement and achievement; and calling orientation, which regards the significance of work for oneself and society. Consequently, the concept of a sense of mission gradually transitioned into the professional realm, extending to “vocational sense of mission.” Numerous scholars have explored this concept, leading to a gradual secularization of its understanding, transitioning from a narrow religious context to the broader society, where ordinary individuals can also find meaning and value in life through work and feel an inner sense of professional mission.

Currently, the academic community has not reached a consensus on the concept of vocational sense of mission, with mainstream viewpoints generally consisting of three categories: professional mission as the profession itself, as a career value, and as a motivational force.

Administration Method and Scoring

A Chinese version of the vocational sense of mission scale was compiled by Zhang Chunyu in 2015, including 11 items across three dimensions: 利他贡献 (Altruistic Contribution), 导向力与意义 (Guidance and Meaning), and 价值 (Value). It employs a 5-point Likert scale ranging from “完全不符合” (Not at all) to “完全符合” (Completely agree), with higher scores indicating a higher level of vocational sense of mission.

Reliability and Validity

A random sampling method combined with online and offline surveys was employed to collect data from college students across several regions, including Zhejiang, Beijing, Guangdong, and Shandong. A total of 606 questionnaires were collected, with 553 being valid, resulting in an effective response rate of 91.25%. The overall vocational sense of mission recorded a mean score of 3.71 ± 0.53, while the dimensions scored as follows:
– 利他贡献 (Altruistic Contribution): 3.83 ± 0.66
– 导向力 (Guidance): 3.32 ± 0.74
– 意义和价值 (Meaning and Value): 4.06 ± 0.64.
