Description
Adolescents are the main consumers of beverages, and the consumption of beverages is regarded as a fashionable lifestyle choice. A global school health survey covering 61 countries revealed that 50.0% of 222,401 adolescents reported beverage consumption. In China, beverage consumption is a predominant dietary pattern among adolescents and is associated with various unhealthy effects, including adolescent psychological behavior problems and an increased risk of cardiovascular metabolic factors. Recent literature also indicates that frequent beverage consumption can lead to “food addiction,” meeting the diagnostic criteria for “substance use disorder.”

Purpose
To develop the Beverage Addiction Scale for College Students (BASCS) to assess beverage dependence in university students.
Test Year
2024
Administration Method and Scoring
The BASCS consists of 11 items across three dimensions: 戒断症状 (Withdrawal symptoms), 健康效应 (Health effects), and 依赖症状 (Dependence symptoms). The scale uses a 5-point Likert scoring system with options “从不” (Never), “偶尔” (Occasionally), “有时” (Sometimes), “经常” (Often), “总是” (Always), corresponding to the scores “1-5”. A score ≥ P85 indicates symptom positivity, with higher scores reflecting more severe beverage dependence symptoms.
Reliability and Validity
The overall Cronbach’s α coefficients for the scale and its three dimensions are as follows: total scale 0.94, dimension 1 (戒断症状) 0.88, dimension 2 (健康效应) 0.90, dimension 3 (依赖症状) 0.92. Confirmatory factor analysis showed good model fit.
Factors and Subscales
The BASCS consists of 3 dimensions:
– 戒断症状 (Withdrawal symptoms)
– 健康效应 (Health effects)
– 依赖症状 (Dependence symptoms)
