Brief Self-Control Scale – Chinese Version

Description

Self-control (自我控制) refers to the process by which individuals consciously overcome impulsive behaviors, habits, or automatic responses to adjust their actions in order to achieve long-term goals. The ability to self-control is key to success and happiness. Individuals with higher levels of self-control tend to have higher self-esteem, more stable emotional states, and better academic performance, health conditions, and social adaptability. Research has also shown that those with high self-control are associated with lower impulsivity and exhibit fewer problems such as procrastination, aggression, addictive behaviors, eating disorders, and emotional disorders.

Purpose

The purpose of the self-control scale is to measure the level of self-control in individuals, providing insights into its relation to psychological well-being and behavioral outcomes.

Test Year

The original Self-Control Scale (SCS) was published in 2004, and the Brief Self-Control Scale (BSCS) was revised in 2014.

Administration Method and Scoring

The BSCS consists of 7 items encompassing two dimensions:
1. 自律性 (Self-Discipline)
2. 冲动控制 (Impulse Control)

Participants respond based on a Likert scale from “完全不符合” (does not apply at all) to “完全符合” (applies perfectly).

Reliability and Validity

The total scale’s Cronbach’s α coefficient is 0.83, while the α coefficients for the two dimensions, 自律性 (Self-Discipline) and 冲动控制 (Impulse Control), are 0.85 and 0.86, respectively. After a four-week interval, the test-retest reliability for the total scale is 0.81, with 0.83 and 0.80 for the two dimensions. This indicates good internal consistency and stability, with solid reliability. The confirmatory factor analysis verified a two-dimensional model, showing good fit, with factor loadings ranging from 0.81 to 0.88, indicating good structural validity.

Factors and Subscales

The BSCS consists of two dimensions:
1. 自律性 (Self-Discipline)
2. 冲动控制 (Impulse Control)
