NEUROFIBROMATOSIS (Von Recklinghausen’s Disease)

A disorder transmitted by a dominant gene, causing mild or moderate mental defect in about one third of the cases. The clinical symptoms are skin lesions (neuro- fibromata), areas of skin pigmentation (cafe au lait), and small tumors in the retina and other tissues. The mental defect is due to diffuse damage to brain cells. Treatment is primarily palliative; painful tumors may be surgically excised or subjected to X-ray.
