How can I use the ROW function in Excel to return the row number of a specific cell?

The ROW function in Excel is a useful tool for returning the row number of a specific cell within a worksheet. This function can be used by entering the cell reference as the argument, and it will automatically return the row number of that cell. This allows users to quickly identify the position of a specific cell within a large data set, making it easier to navigate and manipulate data. The ROW function can also be combined with other functions to create more complex formulas, providing even more flexibility in data analysis and organization. Overall, the ROW function is a valuable feature in Excel for efficiently locating and managing data within a worksheet.

This article describes the formula syntax and usage of the ROW function in Microsoft Excel.

Description

Returns the row number of a reference.

Syntax

ROW([reference])

The ROW function syntax has the following arguments:

  • Reference    Optional. The cell or range of cells for which you want the row number.

    • If reference is omitted, it is assumed to be the reference of the cell in which the ROW function appears.

    • If reference is a range of cells, and if ROW is entered as a vertical array, ROW returns the row numbers of reference as a vertical array.

    • Reference cannot refer to multiple areas.
