Abstract
The Erfassung der Handlungskompetenzen von Übungsleitenden (Strauch et al., 2023) is a measurement tool designed to evaluate the action competencies of exercise coaches. It specifically focuses on three core areas: motivational, adaptive, and organizational competencies, which are grounded in a theoretical competence model previously developed by Sträuch, Wasche, & Jekauc (2018; 2019). The development process began with the generation of an extensive item pool intended to represent the three postulated action competencies. This item pool was derived from content analyses of qualitative data gathered during interview studies conducted by Strauch et al. (2018, 2019), which also provided the definitions for each competency dimension. Following a thorough content validity analysis, a preliminary selection of items was established. Data for the instrument’s validation were collected across two separate studies. Subsequent factor analysis refined the instrument to a final set of 9 items distributed among the three dimensions. The research also reported positive results regarding the measure’s reliability and validity.

Purpose
This instrument is designed to provide a comprehensive assessment of the motivational, adaptive, and organizational action competencies demonstrated by exercise instructors in their professional practice.
Construct
Action Competence; Coaching; Exercise Training
Validity
The instrument has demonstrated evidence of both construct and criterion validity.
Construct Validity: The results of the factor analysis provided strong support for the structural validity of the measure, confirming its underlying theoretical framework.
Criterion Validity: The measure’s criterion validity was evaluated by examining its correlation with the Physical Activity Enjoyment Scale (PACES; Motl et al., 2001). In the three-factor model, all three competency factors (motivational, adaptive, organizational) showed a significant correlation with PACES. When analyzed as a one-factor model, a significant correlation was also found between the global factor and PACES. In the bi-factor model, however, only the motivational skills factor demonstrated a significant correlation with PACES.
Reliability
The internal consistency of the subscales was found to be high. Cronbach’s alpha values ranged from 0.81 to 0.91, and Omega values ranged from 0.86 to 0.96 across the different subscales, indicating strong reliability.
Factor Analysis
A Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) was conducted to assess the model fit. The analysis of the three-factor solution indicated a good model fit to the data across two studies, with the following statistics: (χ2 (24) = 116.5; p < .01; CFI = .98; RMSEA = .06; AIC = 176.5) and (χ2 (24) = 35.3; p < .01; CFI = .99; RMSEA = .04; AIC = 95.3). The factor loadings for all 9 items were significant for their respective three latent factors.
Instrument
Test Type: Original Inventory/Questionnaire
Format: The instrument consists of 9 items. Respondents rate each item using a 7-point scale that ranges from 1 (“strongly disagree”) to 7 (“completely agree”).

Population Group: Human, Male, Female
Age Group: Adulthood (18 years and older), including Young Adulthood (18-29 years), Thirties (30-39 years), Middle Age (40-64 years), and Aged (65 years and older).
Population Details: The instrument was developed and tested with adult respondents located in Germany.
Test Methodology: The development and validation process involved evaluations of Test Validity, Construct Validity, Content Validity, Criterion Validity, Test Reliability, Internal Consistency, and Factor Analysis, including Confirmatory Factor Analysis.
