Emotion Regulation Strategies During COVID-19 Measure

Emotion Regulation Strategies During COVID-19 Measure

Description

The Emotion Regulation Strategies During COVID-19 Measure (Baldwin et al., 2025) was developed to assess the processes that underlie emotion regulation in daily life during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. Development of the measure is based on two members of the author team (AO and ST) conducting a broad survey of the literature to identify potential strategies. These strategies were then discussed with other authors of the article and pruned to a list of 18 strategies that would be manageable to administer in the context of a daily diary study. The strategies included those typically studied with classic models of emotional regulation and those that target problem versus emotion-focused coping, as well as strategies studied within different areas of psychology. Data were collected from a combined sample of adults living in the Northeastern United States in the spring of 2020 and a nationally representative sample in early Fall 2020. Results concerning item agreement and validity were reported.

Purpose

The Emotion Regulation Strategies During COVID-19 Measure assesses emotional regulation strategies used related to anxiety in daily life during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Validity

The relationship between daily anxiety and using strategies rated as relatively healthier was largely the same across individuals, suggesting this measure captures general efficacy, across individuals and their contexts each day.

Reliability

Interrater Reliability: Agreement was substantial (intraclass correlation 2k = .96, 95% CI [0.93, 0.98]).
