| Description | The Chronicity of Neuropsychiatric Hospitalization Scale (Anker, 1961) predicts the length of time that newly admitted patients will stay confined in a neuropsychiatric hospital. It was developed by analyzing items from Meeker’s (1958) MMPI scale, with 55 items found to discriminate between different groups of neuropsychiatric hospital chronicity. These items were cross-validated across three separate Veterans Administration hospitals. The final 21-item scale includes statements such as “My face has never been paralyzed” and “I have often felt that strangers were looking at me critically,” and it proved to predict long-stay patients better than chance or base rate information. |
