Description

The Acoso Sexual en las Instituciones de Educación Superior Scale (ASIES; Guarderas et al., 2023) is an assessment of sexual harassment in higher education institutions in Ecuador. The ASIES consists of 21 items that include questions about sociodemographic aspects, health and personal repercussions, knowledge of protection norms and how situation happened, and the scale of sexual harassment (i.e., verbal behaviors, non-verbal behaviors, physical behaviors, behaviors involving coercion). Psychometric evaluation of the data was conducted using a sample of people who study or work in higher education centers across six provinces in Ecuador. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses supported 4-factor and second-order factor models. Results concerning the internal consistency and construct validity were reported. The authors pointed out the present findings do not incorporate convergence, discriminant and stability validity analyses, which should be used in future analysis.

Purpose

The ASIES evaluates behaviors related to sexual harassment in the university context.

Validity

Construct Validity: The results presented in the adjustment indices, as well as the factor loadings, provide evidence of construct validity.

Reliability

Internal Consistency: The McDonald’s omega coefficients for the factors ranged from .53 (Nonverbal harassment) to .76 (Verbal harassment). The omega coefficient for the overall ASIES was .85.

Factor Analysis

Exploratory Factor Analysis: EFA yielded a five-factor solution with 16 items that explained the variance by approximately 33%. This model, however, indicates a low explanation of the variance.

Confirmatory Factor Analysis: In the analyses, a model of 4 first-order factors and a second-order factor is confirmed (CFI = .99, TLI = .99, SRMR = .075, and RMSEA = .018), demonstrating adequate adjustment, which is verified by the values reached in the absolute adjustment indicators.
