Academic Motivation Scale-German Version (AMS-D)

CategoryDetails
DescriptionThe Academic Motivation Scale—German Version (AMS-D; Möltner et al., 2024) was developed as a validated German translation of the Academic Motivation Scale (AMS; Vallerand et al., 1989, 1992). This 28-item measure assesses study motivation according to self-determination theory and comprises seven factors. The translation followed the TRAPD model and underwent rigorous validation with university students in Germany. Confirmatory factor analysis supported the original seven-factor structure, and reliability and validity were confirmed.

Factors and SubscalesIntrinsic Motivation Knowledge (IMK); Intrinsic Motivation Achievement (IMA); Intrinsic Motivation Stimulation (IMS); Extrinsic Motivation Identified (EMID); Extrinsic Motivation Introjected (EMIN); External Extrinsic Motivation (EME); Amotivation (AM).
Number of Items28
ReliabilityInternal Consistency: Cronbach’s alpha values ranged from α = .72 to α = .89. Test-Retest Reliability: One-week retest reliability was r = .69.
ValidityFactorial Validity: Confirmatory factor analyses supported the seven-factor structure. Convergent Validity: Positive correlations with measures of work engagement and task orientation. Divergent Validity: Weak positive associations with work avoidance for EMIN and AM. Criterion Validity: Study satisfaction correlated positively with IMK, IMS, and EMID, and negatively with AM; cancellation intentions were negatively predicted by IMK and positively by EMIN and AM.
Factor AnalysisConfirmatory Factor Analysis: The seven-factor model showed better fit (χ² = 631.64, df = 329, p < .001) than single- or three-factor models, with acceptable indices: CFI = .90, TLI = .88, RMSEA = .07, SRMR = .07.
