Social Emotion Scale – Chinese Version

Social Emotion Scale – Chinese Version

Description

Social emotion refers to the shared emotional experience generated when the public is triggered by emotions and communicates with one another. This emotional experience manifests itself within the nation and society. Hareli and Parkinson (2008) proposed that the emotional states felt by individuals arise from their evaluations of events and environments in society. Research has shown that social emotion directly affects people’s feelings, value orientation, behavioral tendencies, social well-being, and interpersonal relationships. It can also directly influence behavior; positive social emotion makes individuals feel happy and relaxed, allowing them to deeply, broadly, and scientifically understand themselves and society. In contrast, individuals experiencing negative social emotions may exhibit irrational behavior in their daily work, study, and life. During China’s social transformation, social emotion is a core aspect of the contradictions in the transitional period and serves as a barometer for the state of social operations.

Test Year

Administration Method and Scoring

The Social Emotion Scale (SES) consists of a total of 28 items and is administered online using a convenience sampling method. The scale employs a Likert 5-point scoring system, where 1 indicates “Strongly Disagree” and 5 indicates “Strongly Agree.”

Reliability and Validity

The total scale’s Cronbach’s α coefficient is 0.71, whereas the Cronbach’s α coefficients for positive and negative social emotion subscales are 0.91 and 0.85, respectively. The Cronbach’s α coefficients for each dimension range from 0.61 to 0.90, indicating good internal consistency reliability. The total scale’s test-retest correlation coefficient is 0.78, with subscale correlation coefficients of 0.78 and 0.79, respectively. The test-retest correlation coefficients for each dimension range from 0.70 to 0.80, demonstrating good test-retest reliability.

Factors and Subscales

The total scale includes two subscales:
– 积极社会情绪 (Positive Social Emotion): includes the factors of social pride, social sympathy, and social gratitude.
– 消极社会情绪 (Negative Social Emotion): includes the factors of social indifference, social complaints, social anxiety, and social restlessness.
