Met de Functional Ambulation Categories (FAC) wordt de mate van zelfstandigheid van lopen van de patiënt geëvalueerd. De test scoort allereerst het lopen op een vlakke ondergrond in een rustige omgeving (niveau 0, 1, 2 of 3). Als zelfstandig lopen lukt zonder fysiek contact of verbale begeleiding wordt gekeken of de patiënt kan lopen op oneffen ondergrond, op hellingen en kan traplopen (niveau 4 of 5). De patiënt gebruikt de loophulpmiddelen en/of de orthesen die hij gewend is en het gebruik wordt genoteerd.
